The Winery:
Since 1928, Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal has been engaged in the viticulture of three estates in the Demarcated Region of Óbidos that make up 100 ha of vineyards: Quinta do Sanguinhal, Quinta das Cerejeiras and Quinta de S. Francisco.

The names of these Quintas represent the most prestigious DOC wines produced by this family business, where today there is a cohesive team, formed by the new generation of the Pereira da Fonseca family. We are committed to modernizing, innovating and above all, to meet the standards of the most demanding consumer.

“Our mission is to produce wines, fortified wines and spirits, which celebrate and sustain the uniqueness of Portugal, always contributing to a better future, especially in the region where we operate.”

It all began on October 3, 1928 , when Abel Pereira da Fonseca founded the Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal to manage the properties he owned in the Bombarral region .

He planted the first single-variety vineyards (only for wine – without mixed fruit trees), aligned and trellised, which was a major innovation in the sector at a time when tractors did not yet exist. The vineyards were divided into plots, each plot planted with a single grape variety – another innovation at the time. In addition, he introduced new grape varieties (to test) their adaptability and planted a plot at Quinta do Sanguinhal where he had more than 30 different varieties, which is still called “experiments” today.

At that time, his company, Sociedade Comercial Abel Pereira da Fonseca, also owned the largest network of wine retail outlets in the country – the Val do Rio stores – with around 100 stores in Lisbon.

Today the family continues to run the winery with passion and excellence.
