About This Product :
The Spirit:
This smooth and vibrant triple-distilled single malt is a unique bottle in the scotch world where only a handful of distilleries are using this production method. Using unpeated malted barley, this whisky has been distilled three times to provide a silk smoothness and a bright, delicate, flavour profile. This whisky has been matured in both bourbon casks and a small about of virgin oak casks, which are married together before bottling. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, no color added.
The result is a whisky with an orchard fruit-forward flavour profile, boasting notes of sweet vanilla, apple, pear, peaches, with delicate floral undertones.
The name ‘Glasgow 1770’ is a tribute to the founding date of the original ‘Glasgow Distillery Company’. Our city once boasted over 30 working whisky distilleries, and the original ‘Glasgow Distillery’, as they were known for a time, were one of the largest in the world until 1902 when they closed their doors. We take on their legacy with a mission to bring quality Glasgow-made spirits back to our city, and to the world.
The Distillation:
Not many distilleries in Scotland produce triple distilled single malt. We choose to do a limited run of triple distilled whisky each year as it gives us a delicate and very smooth, citrus-forward style, which is different from our other distillation styles, therefore allowing us to make such a broad range of flavours within our whiskies.
Our first distillation runs very slowly within a 2,500 litre copper pot wash still. Our second distillation is within a smaller 1,500 litre spirit still and our third distillation runs through this spirit still once again – it’s within this third distillation that we’re capturing our new make spirit, also known as the ‘hearts’.
For triple distilled, we’re capturing a very high hearts, with a cut point from 81% ABV to 75% ABV. This gives us wonderfully smooth and bright new make spirit, which is then reduced to 63.5% ABV before filling into casks for maturation.
The Maturation:
Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled is matured across three different cask types, which are then all married together just before bottling. The majority of the cask make up is first fill ex-bourbon barrels, and refill ex-bourbon barrels – these come to us from a variety of quality bourbon producers in the USA. A small amount of the cask recipe, around 4-8%, is fully matured within virgin American white oak barrels sourced from Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky.
Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled is a non-age statement product, which means we don’t place an age on the label. This is because the age of the whisky inside the bottle can change from batch-to-batch as we seek to provide a consistent flavour profile within the bottle, rather than a consistent age statement on the label. You can find the batch number of each bottling on the rear label near the barcode.
The Nose:
An orchard fruit-forward flavour profile, boasting notes of sweet vanilla, apple, pear, peaches, with delicate floral undertones.
The Distillery:
A freestanding, independently-owned distillery that was started by two friends in 2012 with a mission to bring premium spirits distillation back to Scotland’s biggest city.
Founders Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward embark on a mission to bring single malt whisky distilling back to the city of Glasgow and officially incorporate ‘The Glasgow Distillery Company Ltd.’ Named after one of the first licensed distilleries in Scotland. The original Glasgow Distillery Company was founded in 1770, subsequently operated under a number of different names, and produced unpeated, peated, and triple distilled single malt until its eventual closure in 1902.
The distillery begins to take shape and the mission of bringing premium spirits production back to the city has begun.
They are now a team of 16 spirit-lovers who have create a portfolio of flavour-packed spirits across whisky, gin, vodka, and rum. These character-rich products are each inspired by a story rooted in the city’s heritage and history.
