About This Product :

The Grape:
100% Saperavi

The Appellation:
Kindzmarauli, Kakheti, Georgia

The Kindzmarauli zone is located on the southwest-facing bank of the Alazani river, in the foothills of the Caucasus mountains. On the opposite side of the valley lies the Tsinandali appellation. Soils are more stony and less rich than other parts of Kaktheti. This gives higher levels of minerality and acidity in the wines; these characteristics are balanced by residual sugar.

The Wine:
The wine is deep dark red in color, ripe fruit on the nose and silky texture on the palate with a rich fruity flavors and a touch of sweetness.

The Winemaking:
100% Saperavi grapes are used to make Kindzmarauli, a naturally semi-sweet wine from the Kvareli district of Kakheti. The wine is made by cold stabilizing the juice at the desired sugar level, and then bringing it up to fermentation temperatures until it reaches the desired alcohol level. At that point, a small amount of sulfites are added to stop fermentation, allowing the sugar to remain. The wine is then aged in stainless steel.

The Pairing:
Pairs well with rich foods. Hearty and rich Kinkhali dumplings, savory Khachapuri, and aromatic goat cheese.

The History:
Kindzmarauli was a favorite wine of Josef Stalin, who was born in Georgia. (Fun Facts!) However, sales in Russia suffered from the crackdowns on alcohol which formed part of President Gorbachev’s Perestroika program. They then had to cope with ongoing tensions with Russia under Putin.
